Book Reviews
The IEUSS Review of Books (IRB) specializes in reviews of books about the European politics and history. The IRB includes many reviews of textbooks for courses on the European Union. This is an important service for educators who are preparing to or currently teaching courses in the EU because most peer-reviewed journals do not accept textbooks for review. The IRB commissions textbook reviews from college professors who have taught undergraduate and graduate courses focusing on governance, politics, and policies in the European Union.
European Union Textbook Series
The European Union Series Red Globe Press/Bloomsbury (link to the U.S. website)
This was the first EU series (originally published by Macmillan/Palgrave) and remains the most comprehensive with over 50 titles. Books in the series are written by leading scholars and reflect the most up-to-date research and debate. Particular attention is paid to accessibility and clear presentation for a wide audience of students, practitioners and interested general readers. (Source: The European Union Series)
New European Union Series Oxford University Press (Series Editors: Dermot Hudson and Sophie Vanhoonacker)
The New European Union Series brings together the expertise of leading scholars and practitioners to analyse EU politics and policies for an international readership. Established by John Peterson and Helen Wallace, the series has encouraged generations of students, researchers and policy-makers to think critically about Europes extraordinary experiment in politics beyond the nation state. EU Book Series with a Scholarly Focus
Palgrave Studies in European Union Politics Palgrave Macmillan (Series Editors: Michelle Egan, William E. Patterson, Kolja Raube)
Following on the sustained success of the acclaimed European Union Series, which essentially publishes research-based textbooks, Palgrave Studies in European Union Politics publishes cutting edge research-driven monographs. The remit of the series is broadly defined, both in terms of subject and academic discipline. All topics of significance concerning the nature and operation of the European Union potentially fall within the scope of the series. The series is multidisciplinary to reflect the growing importance of the EU as a political, economic and social phenomenon. (Source: Palgrave Studies in European Union Politics)
Routledge Studies on Government and the European Union (Series Editor: Andy Smith)
What is actually governed at the scale of the European Union (EU)? Some domains of societies and economies in Europe certainly seem to be, but the government of many others appears instead to take place at global, national or sub-national scales. The principal objective of this book series is to provide a sustained and structured space within which a cumulative set of books on what the EU actually governs would be published. These will depart from much of mainstream ‘EU studies’ to propose instead social science theory driven analyses that better reflect and reveal the transnational character of government in contemporary Europe. Manchester University Press European Politics Series (Series Editors: Dimitris Papadimitriou, Kathryn Simpson,
Paul Tobin)
European Politics seeks to tackle the biggest issues facing Europe in the twenty-first century. Previously published under the European Policy Research Unit (EPRU) name, this long-established and highly respected series combines an important scholarly legacy with an ambitious outlook on European Studies at a time of rapid change for the discipline. Its geographical coverage encompasses the European Union, its existing and aspiring members, and ‘wider Europe’, including Russia and Turkey, and the series actively promotes disciplinary, theoretical and methodological diversity. Brill Studies in EU External Relations
Studies in EU External Relations is a peer-reviewed book series dedicated to the legal, political, trade and historical aspects of the EU's relations with non-member states or regions or other international organisations. Focusing on the EU's position and role in the world, the series covers the Union’s bilateral as well as its multilateral relations with third countries. This coverage extends to institutional, legal and political issues on or affecting external relations, as well as to specific sectoral substantive topics, including migration, defence or trade matters for example. The series also includes monographs on the external dimension of substantive domestic EU policies (competition, environment, etc). In addition, the series welcomes studies on various facets of the EU enlargement phenomenon and the European Neighbourhood Policy. Flyer
There are several professional associations available to faculty and graduate students to learn more about the EU and present their research at annual and biennial conferences.
European Union Studies Association (EUSA)
EUSA hosts a website with book reviews and short articles contributed to the interest section blogs. EUSA's principal activity is its biennial conference, which is the largest conference devoted exclusively to EU studies. The EUSA conference is next scheduled for May 2022 in Miami, Florida
University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES)
UACES is an active academic association with its own journals (the long-running, influential Journal of Common Market Studies & the open-access, online journal Journal of Contemporary European Research), research workshops, and annual conference. Headquartered in the UK, universities throughout Europe host the annual conference. The annual conference follows the European style for convenience and affordability - with dormitories available and dining hall meals.
European Studies Association-Canada (ECSA-C) hosts a biennial conference - preCovid-19 pandemic, ECSA-Canada's conference would be the opposite year of EUSA's.
